What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows someone to choose other people who they want to make decisions on their behalf when they lack the mental capacity to make the decision themselves.

As our population continues to age, (in 2012 there were 14,500 people over the age of 100, in 2035 there will be a staggering 110,000 * and more than 17.3 million people in the UK over the age of 75) there will be an ever more important need to appoint someone to look after your financial affairs and your health and wellbeing when you are too old and infirm to manage them for yourself.

If unfortunately you have not made provision for someone to act then a relative will have to apply to the Office of Public Guardian to be appointed as your Deputy. This is a more complex, expensive and longer process.

It makes sense to appoint someone now while you are able to look after things in the situation where you cannot do this yourself because of infirmity or illness. It's like an insurance policy against such a situation.

The appointment of an Attorney does not have to be complicated despite the length of the forms that have to be completed. We have a great deal of experience with Lasting Powers of Attorney and will guide you through the process at a highly competitive price.

If your Lasting Power of Attorney needs registering as it's the time for the Attorney to take over looking after your affairs then we can steer the Attorney through the process of Registration and advise on what an Attorney can do.
